For all these tasks, these cylinders are built from very strong, reliable material. But it does not mean they last forever. Over time, the seal inside the cylinder wears out and needs repacking. But with this benefit, the high liquid pressure also affects the durability of the seals. These seals keep the fluid in and prevent it from leaking. Leakage ultimately lowers the fluid level in the tank. 

As a result, it cannot create enough pressure to operate the hydraulic system. Besides the high liquid pressure, high heat, continuous use, and lack of maintenance can also cause seal damage. When seal damage occurs, many think that it is good to replace the entire hydraulic cylinder. 

However, it is not the solution, as replacing the whole cylinder is very costly. That’s where repacking comes into the scene. In this process, the operator opens the hydraulic cylinder, removes the old seal, and install new one. It is a much easier process if done with care and saves both time and money.

The very first thing you have to do is to remove the cylinder from the machinery. But for this, first turn off the entire hydraulic system. But remember, even after you turn it off, there remains liquid pressure for some time. That’s why you should release that pressure carefully, as it can harm you. Once you are sure there is no pressure inside, disconnect the hydraulic hoses and remove the cylinder from its mounting position.

If that cylinder is very large, such as in heavy machinery, you will need a lifting machine to move it. However, after you remove it, dirt and debris can enter through the hose opening. So you should place a cap to prevent fluid contamination. Once the cylinder is removed, place it on a clean and stable surface. Make sure it cannot roll or move while you are working on it.

Now that you have removed the hydraulic cylinder, it’s time to disassemble it. This step is slightly technical, so you have to be very careful. In disassembly, first remove the cylinder head. After that, pull out the piston rod assembly from the barrel. But all hydraulic cylinders are not the same. I recommend using the manufacturer’s manual to avoid mistakes.

After removing the old seal from the hydraulic cylinder, the main part of repacking begins. Here you have to replace the old seal with a new one. But before placing it, make sure it matches the size and shape of your hydraulic cylinder. Moreover, know that every seal has its fixed position. So place them in their correct position inside the piston and cylinder head.

Even one improperly placed seal can later cause major issues, such as leakage, and require you to redo the process. Also, during installation, be very careful with the seals. Do not stretch them too much or use sharp tools, as they can be easily damaged. If they feel tight, use a small amount of hydraulic fluid to make fitting easier.

Once you are sure you have installed the sealing correctly, the final step is to assemble the cylinder. Lift and place the piston rod, seals, and cylinder head into the cylinder body. But make sure you place every part in the right place and tighten them correctly. After this reassembly, mount the cylinder back onto the machine.

Connect the hydraulic hose and check all the seals at that point. Now start the machine and check the hydraulic cylinder’s operation. Observe if the cylinder extends and retracts smoothly. You can use the cylinder again without risk of leakage after this repacking.
